Brick Path

You turn and go down the path of red bricks. The lighting eventually fades, making the bricks look a bit greenish. It's an eerie setting. You hear things moving about through the area, pacing back and forth, like soldiers on patrol. You catch a few quips of conversation, although you cannot make out the actual words. You come across a deep pit. You stare down into it. It seems bottomless. Suddenly a bizarre creature resembling a robed lizard wielding a wand and riding a broomstick flies out of the pit, cackling. It sees you.

"A human, eh? You won't be any use to King Bowser like that! Lemme fix you up! Kekeke!"

Before you can fully register the creature's sentence, he twirls his wand in the air and blasts a ray made up of geometric shapes at you. You try to run out of the way, but the magical blast connects and you feel an evil energy enter your body.

You fall to the cold floor and writhe in pain. Your skin peels off, your muscle dissolves, and your organs evaporate. You are left as a pile of bones in a puddle of blood and other bodily fluids.

Yet you somehow stay alive.

You bring your body to it's feet. A pair of stone boots has mysteriously appeared on your feet, which you feel are four-toed. Your legs shorted, and your rips elongate and connect to the ines on the opposite side. They turn a dull yellow, and more form down your spine. A cracked bne plate materializes on your back, creating the image of a skeletal turtle shell. Your spine lengthens some and pokes out of your shell. You find you can wiggle this growth. It is a tail. Your arms shorten and one of your fingers falls off. Gloves appear around your new hands. Your jaw snaps forward, and your eyeholes grow larger and move to the top of your head. Yellow orbs glow within them.

New memories flood your mind and push out your old ones. A few decades ago you served at one of Bowser's fortresses, and you were kicked into the lava by a certain overall-wearing plumber. Bowser was kind enough to revive you, and you have loyally followed him since.

"Dry Bones! Mario's on his way! Don't let that pasta addict get through!"

You salute Kamek and head to your post.
